(Ficus religiosa) Better known, perhaps as the Botree, the tree of enlightenment, or perfect knowledge, for this is the most sacred tree to both Hindus and Buddhists, and using it as fuel is strictly prohibited (Upadhyaya). A good Hindu who sees a peapul tree will take off his shoes, and walk five times anticlockwise round it, while repeating a verse in praise of the tree (Pandey).
