There are a number of reasons why alternatives to HRT may be sought. The main reason is that an individual does not wish to use hormone therapy because they are concerned about the potential side effects and risks. There may be clinician concerns because of the personal or family history of the women, for example, cardiovascular disease, venous thromboembolism or breast cancer. It maybe deemed that an alternative preparation is actually a better choice than traditional HRT. While many more exist (over 200!) focus here is on those preparations for which some trial evidence exists. The increasing use of complementary therapies has been confirmed by recent studies; 68% of women attending a menopause clinic in London had ever tried an alternative treatment for symptoms and that 62% of these women were satisfied with the results .
