Diagnostic tests in infertility act as screening tools to detect those who need further investigations, to identify the cause of infertility and to make a prognosis. When planning investigations it is important to question the relevance of the proposed test to subsequent clinical decision making. It is also important to be aware of the limitations of some of the commonly used tests and balance the risks versus potential benefits. Figure 45.1 summarizes the approach to the investigations for an infertile couple.
