Premenstrual symptoms occur in most women. There may have been evolutionary benefit for this in that intercourse would have occurred more frequently at the time of ovulation and less likely to once ovulation had passed when the female becomes less receptive to the male. As with all biological parameters there are extremes and so some women have minimal or no symptoms (5-10%). A similar number have such extreme symptoms that there is a major impact on their life, that of their family, their interpersonal relationships and normal day to day functioning. This extreme is premenstrual syndrome.
