This should be given by face mask with a reservoir bag, and the oxygen should be turned up to maximum at the wall in the emergency situation. Restlessness and confusion are signs of hypoxaemia and can precede collapse and therefore should be taken extremely seriously. Oxygen saturation should be measured in air by a pulse oximeter and arterial blood taken for gas analysis if there is any concern, and results of these should be reviewed with the anaesthetist on duty.
