Yellow Buckeye

(Aesculus octandra) An American member of the genus that contains Horse Chestnut. Just as the nuts of the latter (conkers) are carried around in the pocket to prevent or cure various ailments, so in America the nuts of Yellow Buckeye are carried for rheumatism (Sackett & Koch), or to prevent cramps, keep off chills, or for kidney troubles (R B Browne), or for piles (Puckett). In New England they are just carried to ward off any disease (Beck). But some people would say it is done to keep away witches (R B Browne), and then again it is just for good luck (R B Browne).
