Many holy wells have been marked by a guardian tree, often a HAWTHORN. These sacred thorns are met frequently, particularly in Ireland. There was one near Timshally, County Wicklow, known as Patrick's Bush. Devotees attended on 4 May, rounds were made about the well, and offerings made to the thorn (Wood-Martin), if that is the right way to describe the ritual of hanging rags or trinkets on the tree that is the companion to the holy well. The same inviolability applies to these holy well thorns as to the solitary fairy thorns, equally sacred.
BOX was used to dress wells at Llanishen, Gwent, on New Year's Eve (Baker. 1980).
