A name given both to HORSESHOE VETCH (Hippocrepis comosus) and to HONESTY (Lunaria annua), both of which were supposed at one time to have the power of unshoeing horses. Horseshoe Vetch was so called because of the shape of the pods, and any horse that trod on it would be unshod. Very possibly, the real reason may be that the plant grows in the sort of stony ground that could lead to accidents. Honesty earns the name because of its ancient magical fame as a pick-lock. So great was its power that it could draw the nails from horses's hoofs (Watts. 2000).
