Sweet Potato

(Ipomaea batatas) Maoris used the plant medicinally, as well as for food. The whole plant was boiled and used internally for a low fever, and externally for various skin diseases (Goldie). There are some strange beliefs recorded from America, too, one of which claims that you can have rosy cheeks if you eat the skins of sweet potatoes (H M Hyatt) (but that claim is also made for ordinary potatoes). Malaysian peasants always planted sweet potatoes on a starry night; it is a magical charm, to ensure that they fill out properly, by getting plenty of eyes, like stars in the sky (Skeat).
