Rose

(Nerium oleander) see OLEANDER ROSE-NOBLE

A name given to plants like WATER BETONY and FIGWORT, as well as to Hound's Tongue and Lesser Celandine. The first two belong to the genus Scrophularia, from Latin scrofulae, which means that swelling of the neck glands we know as scrofula, once known in England as the King's Evil, for the touch of the anointed monarch was taken to be the only cure for the condition. Rose-noble was the name of an English gold coin, with the figure of a rose on it. More importantly in this context it would have the king's head too, and so the implication is that the touch of the coin was a substitute for that of the king himself.
