(Rivea corymbosa) This plant provided one of the most important sacred hallucinogens of the Mexican Indians at the time of the conquest, the revered ololiuqui of the Aztecs. The seeds, which contain alkaloids closely related to LSD (Wasson, Hofmann & Ruck), were used to induce a ritually divinatory trance, and are still so used in modern Mexico (Norbeck). Aztec priests also ground up the seeds as a potion which they used in ointments to make themselves fearless, or to appease pain (Dobkin de Rios).
