St Margaret of Cortona is the likeliest candidate, for her day, 22 February, used to be reckoned as the first day of spring (Jones-Baker. 1974), and that probably is the reason for the name. But there is another possibility: the French word marguerite means a pearl (the colour of the flower? (Skinner) ).
