Hebe

A New Zealand genus, featuring in Maori mythology, and much used by them (especially Hebe salicifolia), for medicinal purposes. In particular, the young leaf tips were well regarded as a cure for diarrhoea and dysentery, so much so that they were collected and sent out to Maori troops in the Middle East during World War II (C Macdonald). They also took a weak infusion of the leaves as a tonic, and used them also in the steam bath (Goldie).
