Heartsease

The alternative name for WILD PANSY, though apparently given to the wallflower originally (Ellacombe). There is another form from Devonshire,

Heart-pansy (Friend. 1883). Heartsease itself became Hearts-at-ease, or even Heartseed. But the word itself means that which can make a cordial, and must have somehow been given by mistake, for this reputation as a medicine for heart trouble is not borne out by domestic practice, and must properly belong to another plant, presumably the wallflower.
