Eagle Vine or Condor Vine

(Marsdenia condurango) Well known in the latter half of the 19th century as a "cure" for cancer. According to legend, this poisonous plant, or rather, the bark decoction, was administered by a South American Indian woman to her husband, hoping to kill him, as he was in great agony from a painful growth. Instead of proving fatal the vine rapidly cured him of his cancer. Unfortunately, controlled tests have shown that it is not so valuable as expected, though still quite useful in the early stages of cancer, and it is still used in South America in the treatment of chronic syphilis (Le Strange).
