There is a legend to the effect that the reddish veining of the flowers of WOOD SORREL arose from the drops of blood shed by Christ on the cross, and the plant was often placed in the foreground of Italian paintings of the Crucifixion, especially by Fra Angelico. This legend is sometimes quoted as the origin of the name Hallelujah or one of its variants (it is called Alleluia in Italy, too (Friend. 1883)). Actually the name comes from the fact that it blooms between Easter and Whitsun. During this time the psalms (113-117) all end with Hallelujah.
