Malignant melanomas are derived from cells of melanocytic origin. The question of dual origin from both epidermal melanocytes and nevus cells versus origin from epidermal melanocytes alone, remains an area of active controversy. This section will be limited to discussion of the major clinical forms of cutaneous melanoma, including superficial spreading malignant melanoma (SSMM), nodular melanoma (NM), acral lentiginous mucosal melanoma (ALMM), and lentigo maligna melanoma (LMM). Uncommon variants will not be covered.
Despite dramatically improved 5-year survival statistics, deaths from this tumor continue to rise because of an even greater increase in incidence. This increased incidence amounts to 4 to 6% per year in the United States alone. The rise is faster than that of any other human malignancy.
