Unlucky Plants And Trees

ELDER, with many protective and anti-witch virtues, is still an unlucky tree, with an evil character. The very fact that witches were fond of lurking under it made it dangerous to tamper with after dark (Dyer). And do not sleep under one - the leaves were said to give out a toxic scent which if inhaled may send the sleeper into a coma and even death (Baker. 1977). Mending cradles with elder wood was just as dangerous, for a Cheshire belief was that it would give the witches power to rock it from afar so violently that the baby would be injured (Hole. 1937). Again, a child laid in an elder-wood cradle would be pinched black and blue by the fairies (Graves) or the fairies may steal the child (Grigson) or the Elder-mother may strangle it (Farrer). In Ireland, elder wood was never used in boat-building (O Suilleabhain) nor, so it was said in South Wales, should a building of any kind be built on the spot where an elder had stood (Trevelyan). It is credited with having a harmful influence...

Containers

Modern containers come in all sizes and designs, limited only by the imagination. The clay pots of yore, however, molting by inclination in winter frosts, have in many areas been supplanted by glazed ornamentals. Hypertufa troughs constructed with peat and cement, and carefully cured, are widely used to give a rustic appearance for the optimal display of alpine plants. Potential candidates for tufa culture should be chosen with care and caution, however, as the pot will leach small amounts of lime. Concrete pots, with the exposed aggregate styles being especially handsome, also slowly release lime into the soil. Wooden containers including the popular half whiskey barrels serve handsomely where a less formal effect is desired. They have a shorter life span but can be sealed with a wood preservative to prolong their usefulness. (Be sure to let it cure for at least a week before adding soil and plants.) For the specialist, little pots are appropriate for bonsai. (And yes, ferns of all...

Childrens Games

Children still make arrows of the stems of RUSHES, described as half-peeling a strip of the outer skin away from the pith, balancing the stem across the top of the hand, then pulling sharply on the half-peeled strip, which propels the arrow at a target. Girls make Lady's Hand-mirrors, by bending the stem of a rush sharply at the middle at two points about a quarter of an inch apart. The stem is then plaited by bending each side in turn sharply over the other at right angles, and so on (Mabey. 1998). REEDS, too, have their uses. Children would put the leaf between their palms and blow, to make a piercing whistle, and another pastime in the Fen country was to make boats out of the leaves. You took the leaf with its hard little stalk still on it and folded each end back. Then you split the folded ends into three and tucked one of the outside ones through the other outside ones, leaving the middle one flat for the little boat to sail on, and the stalk would stick up in the middle like a...

Berghhenry

Born to an aristocratic shipbuilding family in New York, Henry Bergh (1813-1888) helped to change the way Americans thought about animals. As a youngster he fought to stop boys who brought cats* and dogs* to the river in sacks to drown them. During his service in Russia, Bergh witnessed a peasant beating his cart horse, and he jumped from his own carriage and stopped him. Bergh underwent a transformation that would change the rest of his life and change life for animals in the United States. Upon leaving his post in Russia, Bergh stopped in London to visit the earl of Harrowby, the president of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA),* to learn the organization and functions of that society. When he returned to New York in June 1865, he began the business of organizing a similar society in America. Bergh garnered the moral and financial support of many of his influential friends, and on April 10, 1866, he secured a charter from the state of New York for the...

Early Purple Orchid

The word 'salep', sometimes spelt salop, is Turkish (most of the tubers for its manufacture were imported from Turkey (Coats. 1975)), from an Arabic original, sahlab (Emboden. 1974), apparently meaning fox orchid. The substance was imported at one time from the East. It was used as an article of diet, reportedly very nutritious (Fluckiger & Hanbury), and part of every ship's provisions to prevent famine at sea (Thornton), for the dried material swells to several times its size when water is added, so it was standard starchy food in the days of sailing ships. It forms a jelly with a large proportion of water. A decoction flavoured with sugar and spice, or wine, was reckoned an agreeable drink for invalids though it was acknowledged that it has no medicinal value. Nevertheless, it was used for the treatment for colitis and diarrhoea (Emboden. 1974). It makes a common soft drink, very popular long before the introduction of coffee houses, and mentioned in Victorian books as a common...

Man As A Vector

Construction wood is another possibility for establishing decay. The genetic population structure of the dry-rot fungus S. lacrymans indicates that it has been spread by western civilization to buildings in temperate and boreal regions throughout the world (Kauserud et al., 2007). One route may have been infected sailing ships that were unsuitable for further sailing and were instead partly used for house construction.
