Egg Donation

• Most women prefer to use their own eggs, but for various reasons, this is not always the best course of action or even an option. For such cases, egg donation provides a good alternative, because you are still able to carry the pregnancy and deliver the baby.

• Remember that this baby will not be genetically related to you because your eggs were not used. However, you will still play a supremely important role in this child's life as its mother.

• Factors to consider when selecting an egg donor:

• Some women ask a family member or close friend to donate their eggs, whereas other women prefer to use anonymous donors.

• What is the donor's age? (Ideally, egg donors should be between the ages of 21 and 34.)

• Some women like to know a little about the egg donor; such information may be found in the form of a personal statement made by the donor that highlights her education, hobbies, interests, and personal habits.

• What are the donor's physical and intellectual characteristics?

• Be sure that your donor has been properly screened by the fertility clinic for her medical history and physical exam.

• Is this donor available for a second child?

• Is the donor open to contact from the child once the child reaches legal age?

• Involve a reproductive law attorney to ensure that a legal contract is in place between you and the egg donor and that the donor gives up all rights to the eggs and any children conceived from them.

• Many fertility specialists recommend psychological counseling for the donor, the recipient, and their partners. That's because this is a very physically and emotionally difficult time for everyone involved.

• As part of the egg donation procedure, the donor and the recipient must have their hormonal cycles adjusted so they coincide with one another. This is done with various fertility medications and close monitoring by your fertility specialist.

• Once your two cycles are synchronized, the eggs will be retrieved from the donor, fertilized in the laboratory, and transferred into your uterus using the same techniques as for IVF.
