Plenty of evidence shows that caffeine decreases fertility. This seems to be particularly true in the case of coffee. And this applies to both women and men.

For women, caffeine is thought to interfere with the natural ovulation process. A National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences study published in Lancet in

1988 showed that as little as one cup of coffee per day can reduce your chances of conceiving by half. A different study, conducted by Yale University School of Medicine and published in the American Journal of Epidemiology in 1993, found that women who consumed more than 300 mg (equivalent to about three cups of coffee) daily had a 27 percent lower chance of conceiving per cycle compared to women with no caffeine intake. Also, women with modest caffeine intake—one or two cups of coffee daily—lowered their chances of conceiving by 10 percent.

In men, a study conducted in Milan, Italy, and published in 1993 in the Archives Andrology showed that sperm count and mobility decreased as the number of cups of coffee consumed increased.

To maximize your fertility, eliminate all caffeine-containing food and drinks for at least three months before trying to conceive. In addition to coffee, other items to avoid include colas, chocolate, and black teas. If you find that it is too difficult to do without these things, try substituting them with healthier alternatives such as herbal tea or decaffeinated coffee.
